Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro Expands After-School Programming to New Haven Unified School District in Union City and South Hayward

Sept. 11, 2024: Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro (BGCSL) is thrilled to announce the expansion of its Expanded Learning After-School program to the New Haven Unified School District (NHUSD) in Union City and South Hayward. This exciting partnership will bring high-impact youth enrichment programs during critical non-school hours to Emanuele and Hillview Crest elementary schools, marking the beginning of BGCSL’s involvement in the NHUSD community.

BGCSL’s after-school programs are funded by the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P), which offers year-round enrichments for students from transitional kindergarten through sixth grade. ELO-P is supported by Senate Bill 129 and Assembly Bill (AB) 130. BGCSL has an existing partnership with the San Leandro and San Lorenzo Unified School Districts, serving young people across 22 school-based Club sites and one dedicated Teen Clubhouse. With this expansion, BGCSL anticipates serving 5,000 youths this fiscal year. Programming is scheduled to begin September 16.

“We’re honored that the district approached BGCSL for this partnership, and we’re grateful for the trust they’ve placed in us,” said Kim Pace, Chief Executive Officer of BGCSL. “The opportunity to partner with New Haven Unified School District aligns perfectly with our vision to expand our service area and reach more youth, especially in neighboring cities that don’t currently have a Boys & Girls Club. We’re working closely with our district and school partners to ensure a smooth launch, and we’re excited to welcome our new Club kids and their families.”

Marcus Lam, Director of Student and Family Services for New Haven Unified School District, commented, “This partnership with BGCSL is an exciting opportunity for us. It will help meet the increasing demand for expanded learning opportunities at Hillview Crest and Emanuele Elementary Schools. Additionally, it will create more spots in our Beyond the Bell program at other school sites, allowing us to better meet the after-school needs of even more New Haven families.”

The after-school program at the Emanuele and Hillview Crest school sites will offer activities designed to enhance academic achievement, build social skills, and promote healthy lifestyles. These programs are aligned with BGCSL’s mission to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
