In April, the Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro wrapped up its first Jr. Warriors Basketball League for elementary-aged members, a partnership with the NBA champions, the Golden State Warriors. This exciting program provides a safe and enjoyable environment where young athletes can experience the thrill of athletic competition.
Over eight weeks, teams of third to fifth-grade members from ten schools across San Leandro and San Lorenzo school-based Club sites practiced after school. Members learned the fundamentals and built on existing basketball skills, coached by BGCSL staff. The program focused on skill development on the court while emphasizing essential values such as commitment, discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and hard work.
Every Saturday, the action unfolded at the Bob Duey Gym at the BGCSL Clubhouse, where athletes showcased their skills in competitive games. Ref-ology officiated the games, a referee training program designed for teenagers. This initiative equips young adults with the skills and knowledge needed to officiate games and fosters a sense of responsibility and teamwork. The young refs take charge of elementary and middle school games, ensuring fair play and a positive participant experience.
The Jr. Warriors league allowed participants to bond, build friendships, and develop a love for the game. Thank you to all the staff, members, and their family members who came out to cheer on the teams.
