Consuelo Zuluaga

I was born in a small rural town in Colombia, where I was raised by my old fashioned, overprotective but loving parents. I attended an all-girls Catholic school. My sheltered life, however, would change immensely when I immigrated to the United States as a teen, where I would eventually begin a fulfilling career in education.

I became involved in the world of expanded learning after California voters passed Proposition 49, which provided funding for after-school programs. In 2007, I went all-in on after school programs, working in the ‘After School Education and Safety Grant’ program. As the result of a federal grant, I was also able to provide critical support in the education of homeless youth. This experience helped me gain tremendous experience in being in-compliance with state and federal grant management processes.

I have been a proud member of the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth since 2015. Additionally, in November 2021 I received an ‘Expanded Learning Program Spotlight on Quality Award’. This award recognizes exceptional leadership, courage, and enduring efforts to maximize our partnerships and improve expanded learning program quality.

Working for San Leandro Boys & Girls Clubs is a dream come true for me. It is with the utmost happiness and respect that I join this amazing organization. As the new Director of Expanded Learning Programs, I am looking forward to the successful development, management and implementation of all expanded learning and summer programs in San Leandro.

I live in Castro Valley with my husband and have two amazing adult children who attended public schools here and who live and work in the area. I love spending quality time with my family. I enjoy traveling around the world and learning about new cultures. My personal mission is to help eliminate barriers and to show respect and compassion to all around me.
