San Leandro Boys & Girls Clubs seeks to renovate aging home

SAN LEANDRO — Robert Duey remembers when he became a member of what was then called the Boys’ Club in St. Joseph’s Hall, owned by St. Leander Parish in San Leandro.

“That Club, every day, taught me to compete in athletics, and even though we didn’t have a lot of education (programs) at that time, that competition rubbed off into academics for me,” Duey said at the San Leandro City Council’s Nov. 14 finance committee meeting.

Those values gleaned at what is now the Boys & Girls Club helped him and his twin brother, Dick Duey, get full scholarships to UC Berkeley, where they played on the last Bears football team to make it to the Rose Bowl in 1959. That same competitive drive also helped Robert Duey earn his doctorate in pharmacy from UC San Francisco and eventually open seven pharmacies in the Bay Area.
