Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro lit up our community during this year’s Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide celebration that shines a spotlight on the power of after-school programs. Across all 24 of our school-based Club sites, the event highlighted the vital role these programs play in the lives of youth, their families, and the community.
From classrooms and cafeterias turned art studios, our members showed just how much magic happens after the bell rings. Middle school teens joined in friendly field day competitions, including tug-of-war, while leadership members handed out pizza. At other sites, youth colored and painted butterflies, created light bulb art to share their favorite BGCSL activities.
Parents joined the fun too, stepping onto the field for kids-vs-staff-and-parent soccer matches that brought everyone together in the spirit of friendly competition. Some Clubs even challenged families to their favorite after-school activity—kickball—and let’s just say, you can probably guess who won!
Several sites hosted themed celebrations that reflected their creativity and culture, from space travel adventures and Día de los Muertos art displays to colorful performances inspired by ballet folklórico. Every project and event became a reflection of what after-school is all about: joyful learning, creative expression, and belonging.
Lights On Afterschool served as a powerful reminder of why after-school programs matter, helping keep youth safe, supporting working families, and strengthening our community as a whole.
“Every day, our Clubs help youth build confidence, explore new interests, and feel seen,” said Kim Pace, CEO of BGCSL. “Lights On Afterschool was a moment to pause and recognize the power of these programs and the incredible young people at the heart of them.”
