Marco’s creation for the Club is at a hugely reduced rate than his regular work since he knows the importance of this project to San Leandro and surrounding communities.

San Leandro – March 29, 2021 – The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro is nearing the completion of its $10.5 million renovation of its 2200 San Leandro Blvd., San Leandro, CA facility.  When completed, this facility will become a dedicated Teen Center for the San Leandro community providing a new state-of-the-art Tech Center, Maker Space, Music Studio, Art Room, garden and green space with indoor and outdoor program areas to design, create, learn and grow.

Marco Cochrane, a world-renowned sculptor whose TRUTH IS BEAUTY statue energized San Leandro, has designed a unique, iconic structure known as EMBACE that is both art and function.  The sculpture will provide shade on the corner of Marina and San Leandro Boulevards over a semicircle raised concrete platform to be used for presentations, theatrical productions, musical performances, group projects by teens and the community. As a Boys & Girls Club alumnus and low-income youth himself, Marco understands personally the impact of having a safe, nurturing environment that allows youth to discover their potential through creativity and imagination.  The design of the sculpture reflects the Boys & Girls Club’s safe, nurturing space. Marco’s brilliance is creating an art piece to fire the imagination of youth for years to come.

“Marco is bringing to life the natural landscape that surrounds our building and giving our teens inspiration to create their own works of art, to translate their ideas into real world applications”, said Kim Pace, the Club’s CEO.

Marco Cochrane

Marco was a low-income youth who benefited from attending a Boys & Girls Club in Santa Cruz. Marco Cochrane was born to American artists in Venice, Italy in 1962 and raised in Northern California in the midst of the political and cultural movement of those times.  As a result, Marco learned respect for oneness, balance and the imperative to make the world a better place.  In particular, he identified with the female struggle with oppression and saw feminine energy and power as critical to the world’s balance.  In his 20s, on a dare, he explored sculpting and discovered both his ability to capture human emotion and energy and the power of art to amplify. Self-taught, Marco sculpted in clay and cast in bronze for 20 years, but after attending a Burning Man Festival in 2007, he began to create his sculptures to monumental proportions while maintaining their integrity, thus magnifying their impact.

Marco understands personally the impact of having a safe, nurturing environment that allows for youth to discover their potential by giving them the freedom to engage with programs and activities that fire the imagination, allowing them to test, create, make mistakes, learn and grow.  The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro is such a place.
