In August, we welcomed nearly 200 donors, partners, volunteers, and alumni to our newly branded Club Champions Celebration, an afternoon dedicated to gratitude and recognition. This special event gave us the chance to honor the people and organizations who make it possible for us to serve more than 5,000 young people across San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward, and Union City.
The program opened with one of our own Club kids, sixth grader JJ, who served as emcee. JJ shared how the after-school program at Guy Emanuele Elementary gave him a safe place to play sports, explore his love for dance and music, and gain the confidence to step onto the stage for a talent show, an experience that helped him become New Haven Unified School District’s inaugural Youth of the Year. Hearing his story reminded us why this work matters.
Our Board Chair, Daryl Thomas, followed with remarks from his own journey as a former Club kid. “Your gifts are not just donations,” said Daryl. “They are transformational. Because of your support, kids today have the same chance I had to grow, to lead, and to dream big.”
CEO, Kim Pace, also reflected on the power of community support. “Everything we accomplish at the Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro happens because of the people in this room,” Kim shared. “Your generosity allows us to reach more kids, strengthen our programs, and ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.”
Kim also took time to honor one of our most remarkable leaders, Pat Marino, who recently passed but whose contributions will continue to shape our organization for years to come. Over the course of 15 years, Pat played a central role in our growth and success. She led the $11 million capital campaign that rebuilt our San Leandro Clubhouse, a monumental achievement that continues to benefit thousands of youth and families. As our Director of Development and a trusted partner to leadership, she guided vision, strategy, and community relationships with wisdom and unwavering commitment.
“There wasn’t a major decision that didn’t benefit from her wisdom, insight, and unwavering thought partnership,” Kim said. “The truth is, the Club would not be where it is today without Pat, and I would not be the leader I am today without her by my side.” Pat was a fierce champion for our mission, a reliable teammate, and a tireless advocate for young people. Her legacy endures in the members she inspired, the spaces she helped create, and the deep sense of community she nurtured.
We were also proud to highlight our longtime partnership with Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. “When we support BGCSL, we’re supporting our own community,” said Justin Reese, CEO of Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. “It’s our responsibility to help build a place where every child can thrive.”
The afternoon closed with a big group photo and a sweet treat from Ghirardelli. It was the perfect way to celebrate the champions who make great futures possible.
