Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro is proud to announce an expansion of its partnership with New Haven Unified School District, adding two new school-based Clubs at Searles Elementary and Pioneer Elementary in Union City, to help New Haven meet the growing demand for after-school care for their students. The new after-school programs will officially open on January 20, 2026, increasing access to high-quality after-school care for families and creating new job opportunities in the community.
This expansion builds upon BGCSL’s successful 2024 launch of after-school programs at Hillview Crest and Guy Emanuele Elementary Schools, which have been met with enthusiasm by members and families. Parents praised the programs for their structure, care, and positive impact. “At first, my child felt hesitant to start the new program. Now, they don’t want to come home!” shared one parent. Another added, “My daughter loves the program—it’s very structured and well thought out.” A third noted, “Everyone is so nice. Thank you for looking after my daughter. She really enjoys the program.” With the addition of two more school-based Clubs, BGCSL will be able to serve an additional 500 students from the moment the school bell rings until 6 p.m. each school day.
“This next chapter is a powerful reflection of what happens when passion meets purpose,” said Kim Pace, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro. “Our collective commitment—to create safe, engaging, and high-quality after-school experiences that inspire academic success, character, and healthy lifestyles—continues to come alive in new ways thanks to our incredible staff and district partners.”
BGCSL’s site will be staffed by trained program managers and youth development professionals, guided by Boys & Girls Clubs of America values that center on creating a safe, supportive, and enriching environment for all youth. BGCSL and NHUSD are working closely to ensure a seamless transition for students and families.
“The partnership between NHUSD and Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro has contributed positively to our community,” said Jennifer Hawkins, Coordinator of the Union City Family Center. “At Hillview Crest and Guy Emanuele, this collaboration has supported working families, enriched students’ experiences, and strengthened their sense of belonging. We are prepared to extend this model to two more schools and continue to provide the care and learning experiences our students and families need.”
In addition to serving more youth, the expansion will open the door to new career opportunities in Union City, with positions available for Youth Development Professionals and program support staff. These roles offer meaningful pathways in education and youth development, perfect for those passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people.
