OUR STORY

The Boys and Girls Club Story

At our core, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Leandro is about CONNECTIONS, helping youth find a real connection with a caring adult in our programs and creating a space for them to grow socially, emotionally and physically in a safe and nurturing place.  While recent research shows that kids who are connected to a caring place a nd caring adults are more successful in life, the Club has been living that research every time, every day another child comes through our doors.  Since 1947 with our first beginnings at Saint Leander School, the 45,000 youth who have been part of our history are a testament to the fact that one caring person in a child’s life makes all the difference.

The Club provides a safe environment where youth can explore new activities, have fun with their friends and grow into the great adults they were destined to be. The Club is all about connections that promote social and emotional wellness individually for each young person and collectively for our community of families that we serve.

Originally offering mostly sports and recreational activities, the Club’s programs have evolved to meet the needs of youth in the 21st Century and the challenges they face.  Today, the Club offers an expanded learning after school program to 1,200+ low-income youth at 12 school sites, 10 elementary and 2 middle schools, in the San Leandro and San Lorenzo Unified School Districts.  Our programs are reaching the youth and families most in need in our communities.

Our programs range from a Reading and Math Intervention Program, Daily Physical Fitness and Sports, a Healthy Choices, Healthy Habits Program offering youth gardening, cooking and nutrition classes, arts and crafts, After School Kidz Science, computer lab, and a new Teen Mentoring Program from the Life Goes On Foundation.  Our Vision 2020 Plan includes future teen programming, expanded Open Gym hours for the community for wellness and sports programs, a community garden, farmers market, Smart City Maker Lab and so much more.  Check out our capital campaign page for more on this.
